ASUS has always been a great manufacturer of smartphones. 2016 has been great for ASUS with ZenFone 3 lineup. The company is yet to launch the ZenFone 3 Zoom, a successor to 2015’s ZenFone Zoom. ASUS is trying to pull something great out of present smartphone standards. Let’s have a look at some of the interesting changes that ASUS have made with ZenFone 3 Zoom.
ASUS has come up with some interesting design elements that seem a bit similar to Apple iPhone 7 Plus. ZenFone 3 Zoom comes with all metal uni-body construction with flat back and rounded corners. It is just 7.99 mm thick and weighs about 170 grams. On the top left corner of the back, there is a dual camera setup similar to Apple’s most expensive flagship. Under the camera is the dual-LED real tone flash followed by a fingerprint reader. On the front, it has front-firing camera along with a bunch of sensors on the top. Following this is a 5.5-inch AMOLED display and capacitive keys. On the bottom, there is a speaker grill, a USB Type-C port, a microphone and guess what?- the 3.5 mm headphone jack! There is a secondary microphone on the left and volume rocker and power button on the opposite side.
ZenFone 3 Zoom comes with a 1080p AMOLED panel with 76.5% screen-to-body ratio and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It can get 500 nits bright for good outdoor legibility. The screen also comes with 100% NTSC high color gamut for vibrant colors and a Bluelight filter for eye care.
PROCESSOR AND MEMORY
ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Octa-core processor, clocked at 2.0 GHz. The chipset is very power efficient given that it runs on 14 nm technology. It is paired up with Adreno™ 506 GPU for graphics enhancement. The phone comes in three variants with 32GB, 64GB and 128GB internal storage options. The memory can be further expanded till 2TB.
ASUS has made some great improvements in camera department with ZenFone 3 Zoom. ZenFone 3 Zoom is rocking a 12MP dual camera setup with TriTech+auto-focus(combining Dual Pixel PDAF, 2nd generation Laser auto-focus and Subject tracking auto-focus). The main shooter a 12MP camera with a wide f/1.7 aperture just like the Samsung Galaxy S7. It’s a pretty big sensor with 1/2.55″ sensor size and 1.4 µm large pixels for better low light pictures. It has a 6P lens with 25 mm focal length and 82° field of view. This shooter also features 4-axis, 4 stops Optical Image Stabilization for steady photos and 3-axis Electronic Image Stabilization for shake-free videos. It can record upto 4K at 30 fps and comes with RGB sensor for the best white balance and natural looking colors.
The Zoom camera is a 12MP shooter with 12 times total zoom and 2.3 times optical zoom. It consists of a 5P lens with a focal length of 59 mm similar to Apple iPhone 7 Plus’s Telephoto lens. This shooter can also record videos upto 4K but at a lower frame rate of 24 fps. This camera doesn’t feature OIS.
The front camera is a 13MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture. The camera app does come with lots of tweaks for a deeper camera experience.
WIRELESS AND CONNECTIVITY
ZenFone 3 Zoom supports 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi direct. It uses GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, and BDSS for navigation. Two SIM cards can be inserted but it’s a hybrid slot. Only one SIM card can connect to 3G WCDMA / 4G LTE service at a time. This beast comes with Accelerator, E-Compass, Gyroscope, Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, RGB sensor, IR sensor, and Fingerprint for an immersive experience.
SOFTWARE AND AUDIO
ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom comes with Android Marshmallow out of the box with ZenUI on top.
This UI is bloated with many unwanted apps but does possess some interesting customizations. However, these unwanted apps can be disabled to free some RAM space. ASUS will take a few weeks time to upgrade it’s smartphones to Android N.
ZenFone 3 Zoom has SonicMaster and High-Res Audio certification for high quality audio output. ASUS promises 20% louder, 42% less-distorted and 4X CD quality with ZenFone 3 Zoom. the phone also features DTS Headphone:X™ 7.1 support.
BATTERY AND LAUNCH
ZenFone 3 Zoom packs a whopping 5000 mAh battery in just 7.99 mm thick case. This is probably the thinnest phone such big battery. ASUS promises 42 days of standby time, Up to 48hrs 3G talk time, Up to 25hrs Wi-Fi web browsing and Up to 6.4hrs 4K video recording. The phone can also act as a power to charge other devices. The Chipset itself is very power efficient working on 14nm technology. ZenFone 3 Zoom is likely to come out in February of this year. The price is still an unknown factor and the phone is expected to cost around $450-$500(Rs. 30540- Rs. 33923).
